The AI research platforms, compared honestly

Eight platforms that come up when teams look for AI-moderated research, what each is actually good at, and where each one stops. 8xResearch is one of them and this is our page, so every entry below carries a real limit — including ours.

The platforms

8xresearch.com

8xResearch

AI-moderated interviews that run in parallel and return ranked themes with the quotes underneath.

Strength. Interviews can be triggered by product telemetry, so a study opens at the moment someone churns or abandons onboarding rather than weeks later. Findings are readable from Claude, ChatGPT or an IDE over MCP.

Limit. Qualitative only — it explains why, not how many. No research repository for work done elsewhere, and no usability testing.

Best for. Product, growth and engineering teams who ship weekly and want evidence at the same tempo.

listenlabs.ai

Listen Labs

AI-moderated customer research covering study design, recruitment, moderation and reporting.

Strength. The largest participant network of the group, reported at over 50 million, and interviews in more than 120 languages. Output includes finished reports and slide decks.

Limit. Acquired by Salesforce in 2026, so its direction now follows a CRM roadmap rather than a research one — worth weighing if you are buying for the next three years.

Best for. Large consumer brands needing broad reach and a polished deliverable.

strella.io

Strella

AI-moderated and human-moderated video and voice interviews with real-time synthesis.

Strength. Both AI and human moderation in one platform, with instant clip sharing and search across past projects. Recruitment is included.

Limit. Oriented to consumer research; less aimed at telemetry-triggered product work.

Best for. Teams who want AI speed but need a human moderator for some studies.

outset.ai

Outset

AI-moderated qualitative interviews at scale.

Strength. Established in this category, with strong brand recognition among research buyers.

Limit. Less focus on triggering studies from product behaviour.

Best for. Research teams running structured qualitative programmes.

heymarvin.com

Marvin

A research repository and knowledge-management platform that has added an AI moderator.

Strength. The strongest repository of the group: if you already hold years of research across tools, this is where it goes.

Limit. Repository first, interviewer second — AI moderation is built for smaller concurrent volumes than a parallel-interview platform.

Best for. Teams whose problem is organising existing research, not producing more of it.

conveo.ai

Conveo

AI-moderated interviews aimed at market research workflows.

Strength. Market-research framing and conventions, familiar to insights teams.

Limit. Built around the insights function rather than a product team's release cycle.

Best for. Insights and market-research teams inside larger organisations.

userinterviews.com

User Interviews

A participant recruitment marketplace, not an interviewing platform.

Strength. Reach and panel quality for finding people to speak to.

Limit. Recruits participants; it does not moderate, analyse or synthesise. A different layer.

Best for. Teams who already run their own interviews and only need the right people.

respondent.io

Respondent

A participant recruitment marketplace focused on verified professionals and B2B.

Strength. Around four million verified participants, strong for hard-to-reach professional and B2B audiences.

Limit. Recruitment and scheduling only — no analysis or synthesis once interviews are done.

Best for. B2B research where finding the right job title is the hard part.

How to choose between them

  • You need interviews to start when something happens in your product

Look for telemetry triggers. 8xResearch opens an interview on a product event; most of this category starts from a scheduled study instead.

  • You need a statistically representative number

None of these are the right tool. AI-moderated interviews explain why people do things; a survey platform measures how many.

  • You already have years of research scattered across tools

Marvin is a repository first and is built for exactly that problem.

  • You only need to find the right people

User Interviews and Respondent are recruitment marketplaces. They will not moderate or analyse, and they are cheaper than a platform that does.

  • Some studies need a human moderator

Strella runs both AI and human-moderated sessions in one place.

  • You want findings inside the tools you already work in

8xResearch exposes studies over MCP, so Claude, ChatGPT or an IDE can read them without a dashboard.
